Science and Symphonies

-- An IC Radio Show!

This show is all about experimenting with different styles of presenting science radio programmes, but with a particular focus on science and music (hence the show title).

Each week I'll be talking about a particular topic in science, most often to do with the science of music, and playing appropriately linked classical music.

The official show blog is here.

Enjoy!

No show 4!

Posted Wednesday 2 February 2011 by Polly

This week was going to be all music to make up for the fact that last week there was no music.

But the studio was taken off-air last night and this morning the security in Beit Quad wouldn't let me in the studio to record my show.

So don't listen to the 2nd February recording as it will be all pop music and no me or classical stuff!

Show 3 - Metamaterials

Posted Wednesday 26 January 2011 by Polly

This week there is no music due to a disaster due an inability of my ipod and the station equipment to work together.

BUT: along with studio guests Pippa Goldenberg and Laurence Drummond I explored the subject of metamaterials and superlenses!

From atoms to bending light to invisibility cloaks to perfect lenses we delved into the physics behind this topic.

Show 2 - Aleksander Borodin & the Indigo Trade

Posted Wednesday 26 January 2011 by Polly

On the second show I looked at the life and times of Russian composer and chemist Aleksander Borodin. His work on aldehydes paved the way for improvements in the dye industry. This was particularly true for organic dyes such as indigo and so I finish the show with a little history of the uses and production of indigo.

As a tribute to Borodin I played some of his best works, as well as those of other Russian composers such as Mussorgsky and Rimsky-Korsakov.

Welcome to Science and Symphonies

Posted Thursday 13 January 2011 by Polly

This show aims to explore the bridges between science and classical music.

On this first week I started by looking at the science and music of computer games. (Please be aware that unfortunately the first 15 seconds of this week's recording was cut off. But it was just me introducing the show).

I'll have more information on my official show blog at:

Please feel free to email with suggestions for show themes and music!
